Sikkim

Contoured by Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal, the state of Sikkim in northeast India is one of the top-notch travel destinations for globetrotters in India. Along with political stability, natural vicinity and soothing sound of “Om Mani Padme Hum” – Mantra of compassion, the state in the laps of world’s third highest and India’s highest mountain – Mt.Khangchendzonga has a breathtaking vista which includes snow-coated mountains, flower-sheathed valleys, glaciers, dense forests, pagoda-style houses and Buddhist monasteries like Pemayangtse which has roots in the early 1700s, makes it a haven for nature-nuts and thrill-seekers who are fond of paragliding, Helicopter -riding, River Rafting, etc.

 

History

 

The history of Sikkim goes back to the 17th century when it was discovered by the Namgyal dynasty and governed by a Buddhist priest-king. In 1890, the kingdom turned into a regal state of British India which continued till 1947 i.e. till independence. In 1975, this liberated country became a part of India.

Gangtok

Capital of Sikkim, only Gangtok offers incredible views of the magnificent Kanchenjunga among all the mesmerizing hill stations of Sikkim. Besides activities like Sightseeing, Camping, Yak-riding & Trekking;  the place has sparkling valleys, snow-laden cliffs, and serene lakes to offer a tree-hugger.

Places to visit: Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Hanuman Tok, MG Marg, Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple, Banjhakri Water Falls, Himalayan Zoological Park, Ranka Monastery.

Best time to visit: Throughout the year/ May to October

 

Ravangla

Established at the foot of Menam hill, Ravangla is a town-small in South Sikkim. Majestic snow-capped peaks, rolling valleys & waterfalls, abundant & exotic flora and fauna in dense woodlands, panoramic tea gardens, a fusion of ethnic culture with urbanization, old monasteries, village huts, and fresh ambiance make it an ideal destination for a vacation away from city’s hustle and bustle.

Places to visit: Buddha Park, Temi Tea Garden, Samdruptse Hill, Ralong Monastery, Maenam Hill, Doling Gompa, Kheunpheling Carpet Centre.

Best time to visit: Throughout the year

 

Zuluk

Situated at an elevation of 10000 ft. above sea level, Zuluk (Dzuluk/Jhuluk/Juluk) is an ethereal town gifted with enrapturing aesthetics of snow-covered hills, dense backwoods, deep canyons, and dazzling streams.

Places to visit: Zuluk Wildlife sanctuary, Tukla Valley, Lungthung, Gnathang Valley, Adi Baba Mandir, The Thambi View Point, Nag Temple, Kamalpokhari Lake.

Best time to visit: March to May

 

Yuksom

Also known as ‘Gateway to Kanchenjunga’, Yuksom is a beautiful town that attracts tourists throughout the year. Petite & ancient yet alluring town on the west side of Sikkim, Yuksom is a pristine & nature-brimming land among scenic woodlands and majestic hills that offers an outlandish time-off experience.

Places to visit:  Kanchenjunga Falls, Tashiding Monastery, Khecheopalri Lake, Norbugang Park, Kartok Monastery, Tashi Teenka, Singshore Bridge, Dubdi Gompa, Mani Hall

Pelling

Bewitching town in the Western Sikkim, Pelling is the most lovable tourist destination after Gangtok due to the beautiful glimpses of Kanchenjunga & its nearby mountains it offers, famous Pemayangtse monastery, meditation spots, village trotting, and mountain biking that entices adventure enthusiasts. 

Places to visit: Darap Village, Sewaro Rock Garden, Singshore Bridge, Sangachoeling Monastery, Rimbi Waterfall, Tashiding Monastery, Yuksom, Changey Waterfall, Ravangla

Yumthang Valley

Located at a height of 3564 meters, Yumthang Valley also known as the “Valley of flowers” is a hueful land of hot springs, yaks, rivers, and lush green meadows. Besides, miraculous healing energies, Pine & silver fir trees, brimming streams, and imposing scenes of Pauhunri and Shundu Tsenpa mountains are sure to spellbind the viewers. 

Places to visit: Yumthang River, Solang Valley, Zero Point, Lachung Monastery, Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Lachen

Famous for Lachung monastery, Lachen is a beautiful tourist spot also known as “the gateway to the holy Tso Lhamu and Gurudongmar lakes”.It is one of the most renowned places among Buddhist wayfarers.

Places to visit: Lachen Monastery, Thangu Valley, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, Gurudongmar Lake, Chopta Valley, Lhonak Valley, or Muguthang Valley, Tso Lhamo Lake.
