Lakshadweep

The most spectacular and smallest Union Territory of India, ‘Lakshadweep’ is a tropical cluster of coral reefs and 36 mesmerizing islands, nestled approx 400 km far from the west coast into the Arabian Sea in India. Consisting of 12 atolls, 3 reefs, and 5 submerged banks, Lakshadweep has the most amazing and exotic islands & beaches of India among which 10 islands are colonized. The union territory is a pristine leisure sport with a rich heritage of culture and ecology. Lakshadweep offers kaledopic and beautiful underwater views and water adventures like swimming, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, and kayaking.

 

History 

Lakshadweep was disassociated from Madras on November 1, 1956, during the reconstitution of states in India. At this time, the place obtained a separate identity of union territory for administrative reasons and was named as Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands and finally Lakshadweep on November 1, 1973.

Minicoy Island

Locally famous as Maliku, Minocy is the second-largest and southernmost island in Lakshadweep. The island is famous for its sandy white beaches with vibrant coral reefs, sequestered lagoons, and fresh blue oceans. Minicoy is one of the few occupied islands that is most visited for its renowned beach resorts that makes it an ideal spot for romantic travelers seeking placidity and quality hours to spend with their dearest amidst the unrefined beaches and the crystal blue water. 

 

Bangaram Island

The largest island in the atoll, Bangaram Island is a beautiful and pristine island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Bangaram is a small teardrop-shaped island with vibrant coral reefs, soft white sand beaches, turquoise-painted water, and tall palm trees.

 

Wander around the island, enjoy a dive with the hueful fishes, check out & befriend the dolphins, see the leisure moves of the turtles on the beach or under the water or perceive the vibrancy of the coral reefs around, Bangaram Island offers a wide array of tourist delights to experience. Agatti Island

Nestled on a coral atoll viz Agatti, Agatti Island is one of the sparkles among the cluster of islands in Lakshadweep. The mesmerizing Agatti island expands over a distance of 8 km and is inhabited by approx 8000 residents. With the ecstatic beauty of coral reefs, white sand, soothing sun, crystal clear water under the huge blue skies, Agatti Island is an utter haven for beach lovers and explorers. One may explore the natural richness of the island on foot or a two-wheeler rented to travel.

 

Kavaratti Islands

Headquarters of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, Kavaratti Island is a splendid island with beautiful sea views and untouched white-sand beaches. Situated at a distance of 404 km from Kochi, Kavaratti is a tiny island stretched over an area of 3.93 sqm km. The island has 12 atolls, 3 coral reefs, and 5 submerged banks which offer amazing glances of the Arabian sea and rich marine life among the shimmering white-sand beaches and serene nature. Spectacular scenery and adventurous water sports make it a popular tourist destination.

 

Kalpeni Island

Famous for water adventures like Scuba Diving, Sailing Yachts, Snorkeling, Reef Walking, Kayaking and canoeing, Kalpeni Island is one among the most enticing and quaint areas of Lakshadweep. Koefaini is another name for Kalpeni islands that is a cluster of 3 islands viz Cheriyam, Pitti, and Tillakkam which together turn out to be Kalpeni islands.

Kalpeni is known for its pleasing lagoon around the island and abundant Coral life. 

 

Marine Museum

Couched in Kavaratti, the Marine museum is a rich reserve of marine artifacts and related products. Launched with a mission to promote and preserve marine products, the museum showcases exotic and hueful fishes, oceanographic species, and water animals. Here, marine lovers find a wide array of information about sea fishes, ornamental species, and marine life.

 

Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep

The best time to visit Lakshadweep starts in October and continues till mid of May. Right from mid-May the monsoon season starts here and continues till September. Though you can visit Lakshadweep throughout the year, commuting via ships becomes quite difficult during the rainy season.
